Chapter 1
Inclusion & belonging

“Belonging is a human emotional need.”

— Baumeister & Leary

Inclusion isn’t just presence, it’s “mix that works”

A diverse team doesn’t guarantee success.

Inclusion means intentionally activating that mix so people contribute authentically.

Belonging starts with being heard

Research shows that when people can freely voice opinions different from others, they feel connected and valued.

People have a deep need to belong

Belonging isn’t optional, it’s a core emotional drive.

Its absence influences physical and mental health profoundly.

Symbolic cues signal safety or threat

Environmental hints like inclusive imagery or diverse decor communicate belonging.

They ease identity-based anxiety.

Avoid the illusion of inclusion

It’s easy to assume diversity equals inclusion.

But true inclusion requires deliberate practice, not just representation.
