Chapter 1
Healthy Communication

“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood.”

– Ralph G. Nichols

Say what you observe, not what you judge

This comes from Nonviolent Communication.

Start with facts, not opinions.

It lowers defensiveness right away.

Breathe before you speak

Just one breath can change your tone.

It adds calm and helps you respond, not react.

Know what kind of conversation you’re in

Is it about facts, feelings, or identity?

Matching the tone to the type helps people feel heard.

Listen without jumping in

Most people listen to reply.

Instead, listen to understand.

Then repeat what you heard.

Pause often

Don’t rush to fill every silence.

A pause invites honesty and thought.
